One Of These Days - Pink Floyd
From 1971's Meddle album.
Only one of the gems of musical creativity and experimentation for your listening pleasure on this vinyl masterpiece. A band ahead of their time. Timeless TimeTravel music.
Definitely, one for today's technological high definition stereophonic headphones.

Glenn Greenwald is my hero.
In a time when investigative journalism and critical thinking are nearly extinct in the United States of America, Greenwald's logical and non-partisan manner of looking at current sociopolitical issues is extremely refreshing, enlightening and thought provoking. He has a way of breaking through the obfuscation and speaking Truth-to-Power with clarity.
Take the time to listen to the 6 minute introduction by the discussion host, a synopsis of Greenwald's rise to recognition and why we need more Greenwalds to remind us about what is the bigger picture we all are painting.
Take an hour out of your day looking for memes to express yourself on Facebook or reading Trump's asinine inane tweets and actually learn why it is important to think what you want to express, how you express yourself and, more importantly, why it is important to be able to do this freely.

Traffic - 'The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys'
This is for those who dig the groovy sounds of
soaring and soloing saxophone, insightful unpretentious-yet-integral
piano, sustaining rhythmic bass line and delightfully accentuating percussion and drums.
Can someone tell me where I can get me some of this groove live soon? Where is this caliber band of musicians playing with an such an innate understanding and true self-appreciation for/of music today? My soul needs some [at the mo, am thanking the technology gods for the internet].
Is this Jazz?, Fusion?, Progressive Rock?
There is not a lead guitarist in sight (nor ear shot)... This music is outta sight. All right!
So glad that I came of age to such great music.
My most favorite Traffic song...

Time Melts Away
photo by donna - PineGroveFurnanceStatePark, CumberlandCounty, Pennsylvania 2010
Time seems to melt away...
A
young girl, long blonde hair streaming behind her like golden ribbons
in the glow of the morning sun, runs through the meadow.
Her
heels seem to catch the warm summer breeze as she nimbly leaps over the
small brook that meanders its way from the mountain headwaters forming a
natural and informal border between the meadow and the wild blueberry
patch at the edge of the forest.
Reaching
the blueberry patch, she slows to a walk and then stops to catch her
breath for a moment before deftly plucking a handful of plump ripe
blueberries from the low bushes. The girl adjusts the old, but sturdy,
knapsack that is slung over her shoulders and begins popping blueberries
into her mouth savoring each berry one by one as she continues on the
familiar path leading into the sanctuary of the forest.
Entering
the coolness of the forest, beams of warm sunlight stream down through
the canopy of long reaching branches of tall pin oak and eastern white
pines. The girl's senses are filled with the aroma of dried pine
needles fallen in seasons past.
She
removes her worn canvas sneakers baring the soles of her feet to the
comforting sensation of the fallen pine needles which softly cover the
forest floor.
Stowing her shoes in her knapsack, she sets out upstream on the path following the contours of the mountain stream. She
sets into an easy pace listening to the melodious music of the mountain
stream as it dances and swirls over and around the sandstone pebbles
and cobbles rounded by the waters of uncounted years.
In the near distance, a woodpecker strikes an echoing staccato tattoo.
She
arrives to her favorite spot; a natural undercut in the stream bed has
created a small waterfall and she steps into the eddy at the base of the
falls. The water is cold but feels delightfully refreshing.
Stepping
back up onto the stream's shallow bank, she is careful not to disturb
the beautiful lacy moss covering the forest floor like a delicate
carpet.
Shaking the knapsack
from her shoulders, she plops down on the ground leaning back against a
large tree and sighs in delight as she takes the book from her
knapsack...
Time melts away...
...As
she turns her gaze away from the window, a smile warms the age-worn
face of the woman. Slowly, she reaches to pin back a renegade tendril of
her long silver hair that has somehow managed to escape the thick braid
loosely tied with a ribbon of gold.

Waggoners Gap, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania
View of my childhood stomping grounds. My childhood homestead is located almost directly below the rock outcropping on the right near the crest of North Mountain (about the 10 second mark, but difficult to see in this low-quality video ) in the woods at the base of the mountain. There were only 3 other homesteads, back then. Now there are a dozen or so. Other than more homes, I am happy to see that things still look much the same... other than the dirt road along the mountain is now paved and has a name (it was nameless when I was a child) and the the 'main road' from where I recorded this video is much busier with traffic.
At the age of 11 years old, my friend and I with her dog hiked up to the outcropping, know as 'The Bare Spot' in child speak, with a picnic lunch packed in a knapsack. It was quite the feat for young legs and no path to follow. It took us about 3 hours, if my memory serves me correctly. The sandstone boulders are HUGE and the view inspiring. It was that experience which showed me that the world is "out there" waiting to be discovered and explored.

The NSA Files
It's more
than a damned shame that it is necessary for American citizens to have
to turn to international news media to find major news stories that
affect every American citizen concerning the National Security Agency
(NSA), The Patriot Act and how the USA Government is trampling all over
the shreds of the USA Constitution and Rights to Privacy.
But,
since the U.S. media is bought and paid for by the Powers That Be and is
no longer investigating and reporting real news, events and facts to
the American public any discussion is moot. ... and muted.
Make some
time in your busy schedules to read the news stories being reported by
Glenn Greenwald for The Guardian. This is reality, no longer conspiracy
theories. I'd be frightened if I wasn't so damned angry.
The NSA Files
Why We Fight
"Now
this conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms
industry is new in the American experience. The total influence --
economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every
Statehouse, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the
imperative need for this development. Yet, we must not fail to
comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources, and livelihood
are all involved. So is the very structure of our society."

The Moment Of Dawning
photo by donna ~ summer 2013
The moment of
dawning
just before
the sun
rises on the
horizon
The
countryside landscape
lifted from
darkness
by soft rays
of light
Misty fog of
morning dew
lays low upon
the meadows
Like wisps of smoke
rising
from the
smoldering embers
of yesterday
Shadows
quickly fading
into beautiful
shades of gold and green
Stripping bare
obscurity
revealing
mysteries of simplistic grandeur
on nature's
canvas
The moment of
dawning
pushing
through the twilight
Breathing
sweet fresh life
into the
rebirth of a new day
Dreams of
tomorrow

inspirations renewed

'Tapestry' by Carole King
Carole King's 'Tapestry' released in 1971 was among the first albums I ever bought. I spent many hours listening and singing to this album and still sing along with every word to every song today.
Listening now, all these years later, I think back on what a sophisticated young teen I must have been to appreciate such lyrics.
I suppose the fine musicianship and musical arrangements contributed to my appreciation. I don't really know or understand why I connected to this album and the songs back then, but what I know and understand now is that this is good music that stands the test of time.
Every track is a wonderful piece of song/music writing and great instrumentation.
Carole King is a prolific songwriter with a couple of songs on 'Tapestry' hits for others...
You've Got A Friend' is most recognized as a song of James Taylor, a longtime collaborator of Carole King, but it was Carole King who wrote the song.
'Will You (Still) Love Me Tomorrow', co-written with Gerry Goffin, has been covered by many, many others, most notably The Shirelles.
'You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman)' also co-written with Gerry Goffin for Aretha Franklin.
It is difficult to choose, but,
for me personally, a stand out song on the album for me personally is 'Beautiful'...

"You've got to get up every morning
With a smile in your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful as you feel
Waiting at the station with a workday wind a-blowing
I've got nothing to do but watch the passers-by
Mirrored in their faces I see frustration growing
And they don't see it showing, why do I?
You've got to get up every morning
With a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful as you feel
I have often asked myself the reason for sadness
In a world where tears are just a lullaby
If there's any answer, maybe love can end the madness
Maybe not, oh, but we can only try
You've got to get up every morning
With a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes you will
That you're beautiful as you feel"

Who Will Be There To Save Me
photo by donna ~ Horseshoe Falls, Niagara River, Ontario, Canada August 2012
Walls close in all around
with the daily dripping drivel of
nonsensical voices and empty people
Trapped in a place I cannot believe in
shadows of darkness
undulate like cresting flood waters
lapping at the banks of a faraway shore
Through the din of the trivial,
heartfelt cries for help and comfort
from cherished friends and family beloved
echo ceaselessly through to reach me
I am the strong one it has long been said
a tower of strength in the cold wind
a beacon of light in the night
a rock to seek out during the storm
To live each day with love and an open mind
To step from the shadows confidently shining a positive light
Is to cast out sorrow and fear from the hearts of loved ones dear
The desire to comfort
and want to rush to aid
is embedded deep within me
it is part of who I am,
Is it who I am destined to be?
Who will be there to save me
when darkness falls
when my foundation crumbles
when my last defenses begin to crack
the moment when fear launches its attack
Who will be there to save me?
Like the exotic yet familiar
taste of sea salt on my lips
carried on the ocean breeze
Through the din and the shadows
drifts the sweet melodious music of notes
softly bent by strong fingers upon strings and wood
The desire for comfort
is embedded deep within me
it is part of who I am
Music heals me, comforts me
Music strengthens me
It is Music

Words are your tools
Your weapons of choice
Choose carefully to listen
Hear
Seek
To understand and expect
Unexpected truths
Lie beneath the choice
Words are your power
Your wellspring of strength
Wield wisely the confidence gained
Evaluate
Contemplate
Deliberate
Conscience thought dictates
The answer to the question
To empower or to enslave
Words are your opportunity
Your source of inspiration
Brandish passionately to create
Elate
Reveal
The beauty and innocence
To fully embrace
Words are your wings
Your journey unfolding
Soar

The blossoms of dreams
The magic of hope

White Flowers

photo by donna, San Juan del Obispo, Guatemala 1986
I walk alone in the garden as twilight falls,
Shadows filling the thorn covered walls
Watching the sun go down on the day,
I wonder how things could go so astray
Once filled with the beauty of glorious flowers,
Being ever nourished by fresh Spring showers
The garden once so full of color and delight,
Has somehow become faded, no longer bright
What has caused this barren desert to appear,
Why has the sky become so cloudy and unclear
I tremble and quake as darkness closes in,
A cold sweat breaking out on my skin
From deep within me rises a churning fear,
I try to be strong and shed not a tear
It is too late, I have numbed all my senses,
And put into place all my last defenses
Trying to escape the darkness of this night,
All I feel through the numbness is cold fright
I begin to pray that I will find the path,
For I know I cannot endure any more wrath
I frantically begin to search for a way out,
My mind swimming with troubles and doubt
Making my way through the briers and thistle,
I think I hear what sounds like a whistle
I stop and listen looking into the night,
Off in the distance I see something glowing bright
Slowly, carefully I make my way toward the light,
A sparking of fire within me begins to ignite
The warmth of the fire causing my senses to excite,
I give way to my feelings, I worry not of my plight
Down the garden path I continue hoping that I might,
Find that each and every little thing will be alright
At the end of the path much to my delight,
I find the garden gate is covered in white
Sprays and bouquets of every beautiful white flower,
Placed there by an angel as a beacon of hope and power
White flowers of friendship, affection and love,
Light the way home like the stars above
Today the garden shows no trace,
Of what was once a barren place
No longer when I walk in the garden do I feel alone,
For the harmony of our friendship has blossomed and grown
No longer are there briers and thistle to fight for hours,
The garden is an endless sea of beautiful White Flowers

Silent Fires Burn Bright
photo by donna ~ Fuller Lake, Cumberland County, PA 2010
Water of torquiose, blue and black
shimmering like ice slowly melting
in the late Autumn sun
Silent are the time worn secrets
hidden deep below the quarry waters
The smooth lake surface disturbed
only by the faint whisperings
of the undulating mountain air
Standing on the man-made beach
of gritty white sand
I see myself being reflected
in the cold lake waters
The unintentionally
mocking insult
oscillating and
rippling through me
A dormant fury
beginning to simmer
deep inside me
Do not hide
behind arrogance and pride
Whilst settling upon answers
to questions of mid-life
If lacking the sophistication
of the worldly ilk
If speaking the language
of stammering country folk
Do not be fooled
nor hold out pity
For silent fires burn bright within me
I am stronger and wiser than you might know

Harvest Moon
Harvest moon illuminates
Powerful mystique
casting illusion
upon the horizon complete
Visions of strangers
amidst friends unknown
Pass in the night
like stars tossed
upon an ocean of light
Haunted by memories
not yet mine
Feeling adrift
caught lost in time
Long is the road
when nowhere bound
What lies over the hill
beyond the bend
remains still
To be found

Beauty Beguiles
photo by donna ~ Rocky Mountains, Colorado august 2010
Beware Beauty
when she puts on her mask
For Beauty beguiles
and charms the unexpecting
The unsuspecting
Love is a treasure
to be found in your heart
Not to be held in ransom
Unconditional and true
A treasure for you
Open your eyes
to the words that heal
Listen and hear
and you will see
That love is with you
Unconditional and true
A treasure for you
Always remember
never forget
Beauty beguiles
when she puts on her mask

Robes Of A Sage
As minstrels tell
stories in song
fear not for me
For mine is to listen
To hear the words
you would choose to say
Do not be fooled
by the robes of a sage
The light of wisdom gained
can also be blinding
A place for the
wise to unwittingly hide
Personal pain is released
only when shared
with those who
can feel the wounds
that cut so deep
So tell me your stories
of hurt and pain
For mine is to listen
To hear the words
you would choose to say
stories in song
fear not for me
For mine is to listen

by the robes of a sage

Running Free... Like The Wind
![]() |
photo by donna ~ above Guatemala, Central America 1986
I was with friends and my sisters... we were out walking... enjoying getting across a beautiful country park and gardens... Seeing everything we could see before the end of the day... We decided it would be better if we walked faster as we explored all along the way... We began to trot... then we began to jog... then we began to run... it was fun...
We were running and seeing a myriad of strange and common things... We were getting closer to being at the other side of the park by the end of day... when darkness would close in... We wouldn't see much of all the whirling world around us...
I discovered that if we shed our clothing and shoes we could run faster ... We were running barefoot and free of constricting clothing...
As we ran faster and faster, the park filled with natural wonders... We came to a pond covered in water lilies and I was running so fast I was in the middle of the pond... in water up to my neck before I could stop.... I thought of alligators and creatures under the water and turned as fast as I could and tried to swim quietly and very quickly to shore where I had entered the pond...
Even though it was just as far across to the unknown shore...
All was well and I caught up with my friends and sisters...
One of my sisters said that if she braided my hair, I would be able to run even faster because my hair wouldn't get in my eyes and blind my vision.... I agreed... She and one of the friends braided my hair with beautiful pastel-colored ribbons intertwined...it looked great...
A wind came up as they were doing my hair... They had to fight it a bit but they were able to braid my hair with great success.....We began running again and...
I was in the lead... I was running like I was the wind itself... the ribbons dangled a bit at the ends and fluttered in the breeze as I ran... I liked it... it wasn't distracting at all, but like a challenge to get the colorful ribbons to flutter into my field of vision... The ribbons looked like a rainbow and I was running along it...
I can't remember anything specific that happened next... except my clock radio went off waking me to some unrecognizably hard music...
I would have liked to have stayed running in that dream... it was enlightening and I saw soooooooo much along the way... and I was free...
I was free ...
Morning has broken...

'Get It Right Next Time' by Gerry Rafferty
In 1975 after graduating high school, I worked at Listening Booth, the local record shop, where it was store policy to play, at least once, every new release that came into inventory. It was also unwritten policy that the album liner notes were to be read so as to further familiarize ourselves with musical artists, their backgrounds, inspirations, etc., their possible studio associations with one another and to garner general knowledge of the world of music. What a dream come true for a music devotee.
It was in this way I was first introduced to the music of Gerry Rafferty.
A gifted songwriter/singer whose music blends the styles of Rock and radio-friendly Pop with heavy Folk music influences in the style of personal story telling in a manner to which the listener can relate. Gerry Rafferty may have drawn on his own personal complex dichotomies and experiences in his songs but, as every great songwriter, is able to make his deeply moving lyrics become universal and understood on not only on an intellectual level, but on an empathic level, as well. Whether by unintended accident or ironic design, Gerry Rafferty speaks to the tortured soul in all of us...
One of my very favorite Gerry Rafferty songs musically and lyrically, Get It Right Next Time from his 1979 album "Night Owl".

A River Familiar
photo by donna, Big Spring Creek, Cumberland County, PA May 2010
Drifting...
A river familiar
floating the waves of discovery
my own
alone
whispering with the many restless voices
Shadows and strange faces
race along the shore
tripping,
sliding,
rising,
blending into one
Mysterious muse on the move
waiting
just beyond the crowd
beckoning...
'round the curve of the horizon
glowing...
above the tranquility of sunset
glimmering...
below the brilliance of sunrise
shimmering...
amidst the luminance of starshine
elusive...
Wandering shores unknown
never alone,
Yet always on my own

The One
![]() |
photo by donna ~ Doubling Gap, Cumberland County, PA 2005
Running, running away
feet never touching the ground
through towns more worldly,
more cold
through highland meadows greener,
lonelier
seeking that which waits beyond the
borders,
that which couldn't be found
Always running, running while standing
still
it's time for a retreat
time to make solitary camp
while wondering, wondering
where to wander next
Finding myself back in the valley I left
so long ago
for the road that leads to somewhere,
anywhere,
but here,
anywhere but home
forever looking for the one,
the one that couldn't be found
The road circles back on me
feeling too much like a rolling stone
yearning for a solid foundation
to cease the restlessness,
to ease the pain
of forever running,
running to nowhere
Stopping to catch my breath
and look back from the mountaintop
gazing down on the valley
wondering if I could fly
instead of run
would life have been different,
that special life,
the one which couldn't be found

'Paper In Fire' by John Mellencamp
When Mtv first launched in 1981, I was captivated by the concept. Quickly, I became disenchanted with the unabashed commercialism of music via video interpretations and superficial portrayals conforming all to the latest look and trend.
Now, looking back at videos made during the peak of success of Mtv, I find a few video that are well made in an artistic and meaningful way doing justice to the song.
Here is one of my favorites from 1987 ,"Paper In Fire"by John Mellencamp. I like how the Americana Music vibe and roots of Rock Music is brought forth in the video. Among other things, watch for the man buck dancing at 3:02 minute mark.

What a View...
Even though a bit blurry, I love this video. What a great view!
I love it when at about 2:50 mark John looks over and does a double take right into the camera.
It is from this perspective that I have always dreamed to experience at a live show of a favorite performer/band.
Also, this is probably my favorite John Mellencamp song.
"She had a dream
And boy it was a good one
So she chased after her dream
With much desire
But when she got too close
To her expectations
Well the dream burned up
Like paper in fire

Stinkin' up the ashtrays
Paper in fire
Smokin' up the alleyways
Who's to say the way
A man should spend his days
Do you let them smolder
Like paper in fire
He wanted love
With no involvement
So he chased the wind
That's all his silly life required
And the days of vanity
Went on forever
And he saw his days burn up
Like paper in fire
Paper in fire
Stinkin' up the ashtrays
Paper in fire
Smokin' up the alleyways
Who's to say the way
A man should spend his days
Do you let them smolder
Like paper in fire
There is a good life
Right across the green field
And each generation
Stares at it from afar
But we keep no check
On our appetites
So the green fields turn to brown
Like paper in fire
Paper in fire
Stinkin' up the ashtrays
Paper in fire
Smokin' up the alleyways
Who's to say the way
A man should spend his days
Do you let them smolder
Like paper in fire"
I love it when at about 2:50 mark John looks over and does a double take right into the camera.
It is from this perspective that I have always dreamed to experience at a live show of a favorite performer/band.
Also, this is probably my favorite John Mellencamp song.
"She had a dream
And boy it was a good one
So she chased after her dream
With much desire
But when she got too close
To her expectations
Well the dream burned up
Like paper in fire
Paper in fire
Stinkin' up the ashtrays
Paper in fire
Smokin' up the alleyways
Who's to say the way
A man should spend his days
Do you let them smolder
Like paper in fire
He wanted love
With no involvement
So he chased the wind
That's all his silly life required
And the days of vanity
Went on forever
And he saw his days burn up
Like paper in fire
Paper in fire
Stinkin' up the ashtrays
Paper in fire
Smokin' up the alleyways
Who's to say the way

Do you let them smolder

The Story Of Stuff

The Story Of Stuff
Check out this well-made informational video addressing the impacts of capitalism and consumerism on the world, at large. more than 30 years after environmentalism first became a socially and culturally relevant movement and we are still trying to educate (remind?) ourselves against the dangers of misplaced priorities.

Elvis is in the building
Putting aside pharmaceuticals and a pimping management,
there is no better front man in rock and roll
than was Elvis with his full range honey-smooth voice
and sizzling sensuality.
from 1970, Polk Salad Annie, my favorite Elvis video...
on many levels, seems to capture so much about Elvis and his legacy...

Listen To This One LOUD.....
Berman, from Orlando, Florida. discovered Berman while i was preparing to leave Florida a couple of years ago.
3 excellent indie rock albums were written, recorded and self-produced/promoted from their home studio before Berman split and reformed with a new name, Buffalo Gun.
If you can find their album 'Life In The Stars', pick it up and give a listen. it'll rock you.
This video, "Send Me To The End', is from Berman's 3rd album...
(be sure to check out the masterful tapping technique at the 2 minute mark.)
